Compositor y pianista estadounidense de origen australiano. Después de estudiar música en Francfort, se estableció como pianista virtuoso en Inglaterra, mientras satisfacía simultáneamente su interés etnomusicológico recopilando canciones folclóricas en Inglaterra y Dinamarca. En 1914 se mudó definitivamente a EE.UU. y enseñó en Chicago y Nueva York, pero concentró sus esfuerzos en establecer un centro etnomusicológico en la Universidad de Melbourne. Aunque fue un experimentador constante en los ámbitos del timbre, el ritmo, la armonía y la textura, es conocido por sus melodiosas obras breves para orquesta, piano y bandas de concierto, como Country Gardens, Molly on the Shore, Mock Morris y Lincolnshire Posy.
